Alan Irvine's charges struck ten goals as the Preston North End 'home' team came out on top in a memorable Deepdale Legends fixture that helped to raise over £7,000.

The third incarnation of the successful event, which allows PNE fans the chance to bid and play at Deepdale, was won by a side managed by the Preston gaffer, overcoming the 'away' team player-managed by his near neighbour Mark Lawrenson in a 10-5 thriller.

"I always thought we were going to win," joked Irvine after the goal-fest, though his side had to do it the hard way. Having led 5-0 just moments before the interval, a strike late on in the first half reduced the half-time defecit to just four goals, with Lawrenson's team netting the strikes they needed to level in ten amazing minutes straight after the re-start.

At 5-5, it looked as though either side could have won it, but with Irvine's tutilage proving vital, the team in white kicked on, with skipper Adam Pashley netting four. 57-year-old forward Ian Fraser showed there's no substitute for experience as he secured a hat-trick, while the playing legends also got in on the act, with Nigel Greenwood hitting a brace and David Eyres striking the crucial sixth.

The addition of Sean Haslegrave and Graeme Atkinson proved vital to the visiting side's hopes, but none of the former stars could find the net for Lawrenson's team - the honours instead going to Andrew Handslip, Gary Wakefield, and Stephen Clark, who completed a hat-trick from the penalty spot, levelling the game at 5-5 in the process.

Mel Tottoh also enjoyed another late call to action at Deepdale, 23 years after his league debut in the infamous Tuesday afternoon defeat to Scunthorpe during the 1985/86 season. He showed some neat touches on the flanks and offered good support for Eyres on the opposite flank and Greenwood leading the line with all the experience you'd expect of a former professional.

Preston North End would like to thank all the legends for giving up their time, and an extra special thank you to all the paying participants, whose valued contributions will be of great benefit to the work of the Sir Tom Finney Foundation.
