Injury Update
The majority of North End's players may have jetted off on their holidays but the Club's medical team have a busy summer schedule ahead of them as they help rehabilitate the injured players in readiness for the start of the 2008/09 season.
Head of the Medical Department Matt Radcliffe spoke to PNE.Com on Wednesday afternoon to give an update on the condition of Liam Chilvers, Billy Jones and Wayne Henderson, who have been undergoing treatment on their respective injuries.
Matt said: "Liam is making excellent progress. He is way ahead of schedule so we have to put the reins on him at the minute. It's nine weeks since he had his operation, he's walking, albeit with a bit of a limp, but that is to be expected at this stage.
"His calf hasn't lost too much muscle mass, so we are pleased with how that is going at this stage and the surgeon is really pleased with where he is up to. He is going to see him again when we feel Liam is ready to start jogging.
"It's important that Liam doesn't get carried away and he does just enough. We want enough movement in the ankle but not too much because if we do that then it will become too loose and he will struggle to get the power back. We feel we have got it just right at the moment and he is doing very well.
"Regarding Billy Jones, we have just got back from an ultrasound scan this morning and we have had the 'all clear'. We are going to keep an eye on it but Billy has done really well - he's been discharged today and is now getting his first little break before he starts his programme on 19th May.
"To start with, we had ten days where we couldn't do anything at all. We had to stop him from moving the ankle so that he didn't re-open the wound because if we had got an infection over the Achilles then it could have caused massive problems. But Billy was very sensible and he did as he was told.
"Wayne Henderson has got a long period ahead of him now. We've got a series of injections to do which will numb the pain in his back then we can get in there and do some more physio. He's progressed but has started to plateau recently and we are seeing a specialist down in Stoke who is going to help us try and get him ready for the pre-season.
"You can never be 100 percent sure with a back injury but he has got excellent power in his legs and he hasn't lost any muscle mass, which are important indicators for anyone who knows about a disc or back problem. The only pain he has got at the moment is a little bit in his backside and hamstring and if we can get rid of that then it will be the job done for Wayne. He's been patient and has worked very hard."
