The 'play safe' campaign asks parents, carers and teachers to remind children to use their common sense when out and about during the holidays and play safely away from the roads.

In support of the initiative Preston North End have visited over 100 schools and targeted around 20,000 children in Lancashire.

As part of the schools tour, a pupil is picked out of the audience and asked three questions, for the chance to win a pair of tickets to see PNE.

The roadshow visited Queen's Drive Community Primary School, Preston, recently where Year 6 pupil Natalie Clinch correctly answered the questions including naming a 'zebra crossing' as a safe place to cross. Julie Webster, Head Teacher at the school, said: "Road safety is extremely important to us as a school especially as we are situated on a main road.

"We currently take part in the Road Safety Group's Passport to Safer Cycling scheme and are keen to raise awareness of road safety throughout the school community.

"It is vital that we teach our children the importance of road safety awareness so that we can reduce the risk of road casualties."

The roadshow forms part of the Road Safety Group's sponsorship activity with PNE this season. Andrea Troake, Community Development Manager at PNE, said: "This is an ideal opportunity to raise awareness of the play safe message to school children in the Preston and Lancaster districts. We want to remind children to be alert when they are out and about during the half term but also whenever they travel to Deepdale to watch North End."

All schools on the tour receive road safety activity books, the Highway Code for young road users, 'Cycle Smart' comics and reflective and fluorescent hedgehog stickers. Clare Farrer, Principal Road Safety Adviser, added: "By working with Preston North End we can target the younger fans and raise awareness of important road safety messages throughout the local community.

"Working in conjunction with Lancashire County Council's Travelwise Group, who provide a 'soccer bus' to the ground, we support the 'Get There Safely' message to remind youngsters to travel safely whenever they travel to North End. It is important that children are alert and use their common sense whenever they travel on the County's roads, particularly during the half-term."
