Exciting midfielder Richard Chaplow signed for Preston from West Bromwich Albion on 9th January 2008, one month before his 23rd birthday.
He signed a deal which could eventually be worth £1.35m, with an initial payment of £800,000, and a further £550,000 payable based on various performance-related criteria. West Brom also inserted a 20% sell-on clause on any future sale. Chaplow penned a three-and-a-half-year deal - taking his through to the summer of 2011 - with the Club retaining the option to extend it for a further year.
The all-action Accrington-born star made his name at local rivals Burnley having come through their scholarship scheme, and became an integral part of the Clarets' midfield, netting seven times in 65 appearances.
His tough-tackling and great vision earned widespread plaudits and attention from clubs at a higher level, eventually leading to England call ups at U19, U20 and U21 levels, including a spell as captain of the U20 side.
Having been a part of the Burnley side that knocked Liverpool out of the FA Cup in January 2005, he was snapped up by the Baggies for a fee of £1.5m on transfer deadline day later that month.
During his three year stay at The Hawthorns, he appeared on 56 occasions, and spent three months on loan at Southampton in the spring of 2006 before a cartilage injury cut his season short.
He brings Premiership experience to the centre of North End's midfield, having played for the Baggies in their top flight campaign of 2005/06, and played a key role in helping the Albion to reach a Championship Play-Off spot the following season.
