Preston North End progressed to the second round of the League Cup after a fine 2-1 win over Fulham thanks to goals from Hannah Bailey and Fiona Dransfield

PNEWFC boss Simon Gerrard chose to shuffle the pack ahead of the cup tie and brought in Taberner, Jones and Horrocks, all three had been on the bench in recent weeks.

Preston started the game brightly and on six minutes the Fulham keeper produced a great diving save from a driven Taberner shot and the Lilywhites certainly seemed well on top.

Vikki Eastwood and Sarah McCrea combined well down the Preston left on 20mins with Eastwood producing a fine cross that was met by a Emma Sconce shot which again drifted just wide of the post.

Preston's persistence eventually paid off and a Taberner cross was fumbled by the Fulham keeper after pressure from striker Hannah Bailey, she was able to collect the loose ball and slot it into the back of the net to put the home side 1-0 up.

Fulham created just a couple of chances during the first-half the best handed to them in the 42nd minute after PNE's defence lost the ball allowing the Fulham striker a snap shot on goal which Horrocks saved well.

There was a frantic start to the second-half with Fulham determined to have a say in the game, a shot in the 50th minute flew over the bar and a free-kick awarded on the edge of the box was met with a powerful header which edged just wide of the Preston post.

North End's first chance of the second half came when Emma Sconce had another shot on goal in the 75th minute that the Fulham keeper held well.

North End looked to be heading for a comfortable passage into the second round until the London club grabbed a dramatic last gasp equaliser, a corner in the 88th minute, was initially cleared by Preston but the ball found its way into Preston's penalty area to be met by a free header by the oncoming Fulham player making the score 1-1 at the end of normal time.

Heartbreak or frustration? PNE were forced to regroup for the extra-time period and were back on the attack when the Fulham keeper handled a back-pass and Preston were awarded a early free kick inside the Fulham the first effort had to be retaken after encroachment from the Fulham wall the second was driven high over the bar.

But it wasn't long before the Lilywhites restored their lead, breaking up a Fulham attack and countering with pace down the right before the ball was passed to substitute Fiona Dransfield who beat the oncoming keeper and managed to slot the ball home from an acute angle.

Fulham pressed to try and equalise but the PNE's fitness told in the end and they were able to repel any threats.

The PNE Women now look forward to another home draw against Sunderland in the next round.

Preston are again at home this week with Sheffield Wednesday the visitors to Irongate with a 2pm kick-off.
