Preston travelled to Shaw Bridge the home of Clitheroe FC to face Premier League opposition in the form of Blackburn Rovers. With Blackburn sitting in third position in the division above Preston a tough encounter was anticipated.
The opening period was however a close affair with Sarah McCrea for Preston forcing the Blackburn keeper into action on 23 minutes.
Horrocks in the North End goal produced a great save before the deadlock was broken on 35 minutes. Preston Captain Berry unfortunately turning into her own net after a Rovers shot had struck the bar.
Preston searched for an equaliser with Watson seeing her shot on target collected by the Rovers keeper who then relied on the post after a Jones free kick was touched on by Bateman to McCrea for the shot.
The final minute of the half saw North End centre half Cathy Jones heading goal bound from a corner with the Blackburn defender appearing to handle on the line but the referee blew his whistle to signal half time instead of awarding a penalty kick.
The deserved equaliser came 10 minutes into the second half. Sarah Jones free kick was controlled and crossed by Sarah McCrea for Alison Taberner to head home.
The Blackburn strikers Anderton and Penny then forced Horrocks into action with Preston replacing the hard working Watson with Hannah Bailey. Horrocks produced further saves to force the tie into extra time.
Preston's Bailey had the first opportunity of the extra period when following a solo run her effort was well saved by Payne in the Blackburn net.
Six minutes into the extra period and North End's defence cleared off the line. Burke for Rovers saw her initial shot saved by Horrocks but finished at the second attempt to give her side a 2-1 advantage which remained at the turn round.
In search of the equaliser to force the tie to penalties Cadwallader came on for goal scorer Taberner but it was Blackburn who found the back of the net to extend their lead with only two minutes remaining. A cross by right back Carroll veered goal bound and bounced in off the post.
The final minute of the game saw Blackburn score again to give them a somewhat flattering 2-1 and a place in the cup final against Salford Sports Village.
