Director Biographies
Derek Shaw: Chairman
Derek Shaw is a lifelong North End fan, who travels everywhere watching his beloved team, he has hardly missed a game in many decades and loves it as much as anyone to see the club having its current run of success. He is Chairman and owner of Ribble Valley Shelving Limited, a sponsor of the club's shirts in the early part of the 1990's - a very proud moment for Derek. He has been a Director of the Company since February 1994 and was appointed Deputy Chairman in 1997. After Bryan Gray's retirement from the board at the club's AGM in October 2001, Derek took over as Acting Chairman of the Football Club and the plc but the position was made permanent in August 2002.
David Taylor: Non-Executive Deputy Chairman
David Taylor is currently a Director of, and advisor to, a number of quoted and unquoted companies. Until February 2000 he was Chief Executive of Enterprise plc, a company listed on AiM. Prior to his appointment with Enterprise plc he was Chief Executive of English Partnerships and Manageing Director of AMEC Developments Limited, a subsiduary of AMEC plc. He was appointed as a Non-Executive Director of the company in October 1996. At the 2003 AGM he was appointed Deputy Chairman.
Anthony Hughes: Non-Executive Legal Director
Anthony Hughes, who joined the Board in June 2004, gained an LLB (Hons) at Sheffield University before starting his legal career at Pannone & Partners in Manchester. He joined Ricksons Solicitors in 1993 and became a partner in 1995 and has extensive experience in the field of litigation. In May 2001 he took on the role of managing partner for the firm, which has since enjoyed two consecutive years of record growth, along with excellent financial results. Anthony's long-term ambition with Ricksons is to give Preston its first top 100 law firm by the May 2007. Ricksons Solicitors has offices in Manchester, Preston and Leeds, and currently has 29 partners. Ricksons has been a small shareholder in Preston North End for a number of years and has been a corporate sponsor for the last four seasons. During this association with the club the Preston-based firm has provided PNE with advertising and sponsorship for players and the Great Room.
Paul Newsham: Non-Executive Financial Director
Preston-born Paul is a lifelong North End fan and has also been involved in the corporate sponsorship of the club for several years and joined the Board in June 2004. He is managing partner at Haines Watts Chartered Accountants and has been a Great Room season ticket holder since it opened, while Haines Watts have been prominent sponsors last season and will be again in 2004-5. He specialises in audit and corporate finance as well as general practice. As a partner of a growing accountancy firm he has extensive experience of running a business and larger organisations. Paul, 38, also acts for several big name regional companies and sports personalities. The former Archbishop Temple and Hutton Sixth Form College student entered accountancy from school by joining James Todd & Co in Preston. Paul qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1990 and joined Demacks in Leyland as an audit manager in October that year. A year later he became a salaried partner and then 12 months after that was made an equity partner. He helped develop the practice with Geoff Demack doubling its size and launching new financial services and IT arms. In 2002 Geoff Demack retired and the company became the Preston office of the £40m turnover national firm of Chartered Accountants, Haines Watts.
Kevin Abbott: Finance Director
Kevin joined the Board in October 2006. Kevin worked at KPMG in Preston for 10 years between 1994 and 2004, where he worked on audit, accountancy and corporate finance matters for local and national companies. In 2004, Kevin took on a duel finance role with Preston North End and former Club sponsor New Reg Limited. He now works full-time at the Club, overseeing the financial and many operational aspects of the Company.
Coporate Governance
The following sub committees are in place to oversee various aspects of the corporate governance of the Company
Audit Committee
Comprises David Taylor, Paul Newsham and Anthony Hughes. The committee's brief is to liase with the Company's external auditors and take responsibility for ensuring that the Company's internal financial controls are adequate and suitable for the business.
Remuneration Committee
Comprises David Taylor, Paul Newsham and Anthony Hughes. The committee's brief is to review and agree the remuneration of the Chairman and executive directors of the Company
